Preparing Your Home for Spring: A Room-by-Room Guide

After months of closed windows and heavy use, spring is the perfect time to give your home a thorough refresh. Here's our room-by-room guide to getting your space feeling bright, clean, and ready for the warmer months ahead.

Kitchen

The kitchen works harder than any room in your home. Start by pulling out the refrigerator and stove to clean behind and underneath — you'll be surprised what accumulates there. Deep clean the inside of your oven, microwave, and dishwasher. Wipe down cabinet fronts, clean inside drawers, and don't forget the range hood filter. Finally, sanitize countertops and scrub the sink and faucet until they shine.

Bathrooms

Bathrooms need extra attention after winter. Scrub tile grout with a dedicated cleaner to remove discoloration. Clean exhaust fans that have been working overtime during the cold months. Descale showerheads and faucets. Replace shower curtain liners if they're showing mildew. And give the toilet a thorough deep clean — including the base and behind the tank.

Living Room & Bedrooms

Start high and work down. Dust ceiling fans, light fixtures, and crown molding. Clean window blinds or curtains — many can be machine washed or vacuumed with an upholstery attachment. Move furniture to vacuum underneath and behind. Flip or rotate mattresses. Wash all bedding, including pillows and mattress protectors. Finally, clean baseboards throughout every room.

Windows & Doors

Clean windows inside and out to let the spring sunshine in. Don't forget window tracks and sills — they collect dust, dead insects, and debris all winter. Wipe down door frames and handles, which are high-touch surfaces that rarely get cleaned. If you have screen doors, remove and wash the screens before reinstalling.

Entryways & Mudrooms

Winter tracks in salt, mud, and moisture. Deep clean entryway floors, wash or replace door mats, and wipe down shoe storage. Clean coat closets — vacuum the floor, wipe shelves, and donate items you no longer need. A clean entryway sets the tone for the entire home.

Don't Forget the Details

  • Replace HVAC filters — your system has been running all winter
  • Clean air vents and registers throughout the house
  • Test and clean smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors
  • Wipe down all light switches and outlet covers
